The 200th Anniversary of Oktoberfest: "
Victoria Whyte and three fellow festival goers report from the Oktoberfest, which took place, as usual, in Munich.
Written by Victoria Whyte
Known as the largest People’s Fair in the world, Oktoberfest in Munich, attracts six to seven million people a year, who consume over one million gallons of beer! Munich has been celebrating Oktoberfest since 1810 when Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildurghausen.
While Munich’s art, culture, relaxed lifestyle ad friendly locals are reason enough to visit Munich, during Oktoberfest it is all about the beer! This year was the 200th anniversary of Oktoberfest in Munich and it was expected to be the largest (and the craziest) to date. Visitors were not disappointed! The streets were full of crowds dressed in traditional Lederhosen and Dirndls singing along to the ever popular Bavarian drinking song Ein Prosit.
Wondering who is brave or crazy enough to venture all the way to Munich for the biggest party in the world? I asked three Ludus Tours (www.oktoberfesttours.com) clients about their experience.
Drew VanNess came with his Stepdad and two neighbors for a guy’s trip.
Why did you come to the Oktoberfest?
I was brought to Oktoberfest as a birthday present.
What has been the best part of the event so far?
Actually getting into the beer tent itself was the best part of the event. The atmosphere in there is crazy!
What advice would you give to future visitors?
I would tell people to rent bikes for a day in order to be able to go to sights somewhat farther from their hotels. There were a few places, like the Olympic grounds, that we would have really like to go, but they were too far to walk.
Cassie Amundson Mu came to Oktoberfest with her brother Jesse, and sister Mandi.
Why did you come to the Oktoberfest?
We came to Oktoberfest for a couple of reasons… we come from a family of big partiers so Oktoberfest seemed like a great idea! We are more than half German and have grandparents that remember coming over to the US from Germany so it was kind of heritage thing we wanted to experience. My siblings and I all live in different cities in different states and this was something for us to do together before we get wrapped up in our own immediate families and have children…etc.
What has been the best part of the event so far?
The best part of the event… well that is difficult… we all really enjoyed the bike tour and of course the beer tent reservation. We chose Ludus Tours because we didn’t want to waste time and stress out trying to figure everything out ourselves but we didn’t want a “hold your hand” guided tour either. So I think it was great that we were able to do things we wanted to with someone else figuring out the logistics but we still explored and experienced things on our own.
What advice would you give to future visitors?
Advice to future visitors… stay an extra day! We wanted to experience more but just ran out of time!
Guy Shepherd and his wife Amy came to Munich for one week with 24 friends, all for their first Oktoberfest experience!
Why did you come to the Oktoberfest?
I came to Oktoberfest because I was always told it was something you have to do once in your life and since a group of friends were going we figured why not. We’ve never been to Europe and here was a great opportunity. I also have some weird fascination for WW II history, so seeing Dachau was interesting. The beer too.. of course!
What has been the best part of the event so far?
The beer tents are a lot of fun, but unless you work for Ludus your body can’t handle that kind of punishment for too many days! Honestly, I think all of the events (Bike Tour, Traditional Bavarian Dinner, Neuschwanstein Castle, Beer tent) were pretty fun and each one was unique and interesting. Mike’s Bike Tours did a great job and made everything fun.
What advice would you give to future visitors?
Bring two bottles of Advil as opposed to one, don’t play Euro’s (a new version of quarters), and don’t leave Oktoberfest by yourself…especially at night!
And I would say you definitely want to go for longer than four days. A week was perfect for us, Amy and I got to explore the city, surrounding area and of course Oktoberfest!
Prost! Auf Wiedersehen.
